EMDR Therapy

in Pennsylvania & Delaware

Heal from the past.

Reclaim your present.

Virtual EMDR therapy for adults and adolescents across PA and DE.

Some experiences stay with us long after they're over — showing up as anxiety, nightmares, emotional numbness, or a constant sense that something is wrong. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the most well-researched, effective therapies available for healing trauma and breaking free from the patterns that keep you stuck. At Sage Psychiatry & Wellness, we offer virtual EMDR therapy to adults and adolescents (ages 12+) throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware — so you can access transformative care from the safety and comfort of your own space.

What Is EMDR?

What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process and integrate distressing memories that haven't been fully resolved. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require you to describe your experiences in detail or relive them at length. Instead, it uses guided bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping) while you briefly focus on a troubling memory — allowing your brain to reprocess it in a way that reduces its emotional charge.

The result? Memories that once felt overwhelming begin to lose their grip. Triggers become less intense. And you start to feel more like yourself again.

EMDR is recognized as an effective treatment by the American Psychological Association, the World Health Organization, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

What EMDR Treats

What Can EMDR Help With?

EMDR was originally developed to treat PTSD and trauma, but research has expanded its application to a wide range of mental health conditions. At Sage Psychiatry, we use EMDR to help clients heal from:

  • Trauma and PTSD — including childhood trauma, accidents, medical trauma, and more

  • Anxiety and panic attacks — breaking the cycle of fear and avoidance

  • Depression — particularly when rooted in past experiences or loss

  • Grief and loss — processing complicated or prolonged grief

  • Low self-esteem and negative core beliefs — rewriting the stories you tell yourself

  • Phobias — reducing the intensity of specific fears

  • Life transitions and stress — when change feels overwhelming

  • Relationship patterns — healing attachment wounds that affect how you connect with others

If you've tried other therapies and felt like something was still unresolved, EMDR may be the missing piece.

EMDR for Adolescents

MDR for Teenagers and Adolescents

EMDR is highly effective for adolescents navigating difficult experiences — whether that's bullying, family disruption, academic pressure, social anxiety, or trauma. Teens don't always have the words for what they're carrying, and EMDR offers a gentle, non-verbal pathway to healing that doesn't require them to talk through everything in detail.

We work with adolescents ages 12 and up, and we always involve families in a way that feels supportive — not intrusive — to the young person's care.

What to Expect

What to Expect From EMDR

EMDR isn't a quick fix — it's a structured process that unfolds over time. Here's what your journey typically looks like:

Phase 1 — History & Treatment Planning

We start by getting to know you — your history, your symptoms, and what you'd like to heal. Together, we identify the memories or patterns to target in treatment.

Phase 2 — Preparation

Before processing begins, we build your toolkit. You'll learn grounding and stabilization techniques so you feel safe and resourced throughout the process.

Phase 3–6 — Processing

Using bilateral stimulation, we work through targeted memories — reducing their emotional intensity and helping your brain reframe the experience in a healthier way.

Phase 7–8 — Closure & Reevaluation

We close each session intentionally, making sure you feel grounded before you leave. Over time, we reevaluate progress and adjust the plan as needed.

Most clients begin noticing meaningful shifts within 6–12 sessions, though this varies depending on the complexity of what's being addressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is EMDR different from regular talk therapy?

Traditional talk therapy focuses on discussing and understanding your experiences. EMDR works differently — it uses bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess stored memories at a neurological level. Many people find it effective precisely because it doesn't require extensively talking through painful details.

How many EMDR sessions will I need?

This varies depending on what you're working through. Simple, single-incident trauma may resolve in as few as 3–6 sessions. More complex or longstanding trauma typically takes longer. Your provider will give you a better sense of timeline after your initial evaluation.

Is EMDR safe for teenagers?

Yes. EMDR is well-researched and considered safe and effective for adolescents. We work with teens ages 12 and up and adapt the approach to be developmentally appropriate.

Can I do EMDR and medication management at the same time?

Absolutely — in fact, combining EMDR with psychiatric medication management can enhance outcomes for many clients. Because we offer both services at Sage Psychiatry, your care is already coordinated.

Do I need a diagnosis to start EMDR?

No. A formal diagnosis isn't required to begin EMDR therapy. If you're experiencing distressing memories, anxiety, or emotional patterns that are affecting your life, EMDR may help — and we'll assess that together in your initial evaluation.

Is EMDR covered by insurance?

Sage Psychiatry is an out-of-network provider. We provide a superbill after each session that you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. We recommend checking your out-of-network mental health benefits before your first appointment.
